Hold Steady Debate

Matt said
New release – this is a sinch for me…my favourite new release over maybe the last 3 years…hailing from Brooklyn, NY and onto their 4th album (plus 3 in an earlier incarnation) they are a bar-room brawl, a drunkin night out and a new age Bruce and the E Street Band all rolled into one…they are The Hold Steady. Stay Positive may not be an instant classic but just wait until you have had a few brews

i look forward to having the opportunity to listen to the Hold Steady in such an environment. I've been having a heated debate with a good mate about these guys for the last couple of years. he absolutely loves them, i hate them...it all came to a head at half time at the hawthorn/geelong game (you're not ALL from Brisbane are you? :) where i promised him i would listen to them properly. it doesn't get any more proper than at a music club huh. of course if i do end up appreciating them, i will be crediting you Mat and not my good mate.

Just to weigh in here – I’m backing you on the Hold Steady – I have to admit at first listen I thought it was an old man trying to sound young but then I got the album Boys and Girls in America and listened to it on a long drive at volume and the musicianship and songwriting is genious. And on first listen of the new album – I’m still hooked. In any case perhaps we should save this for the 16th at 3pm at Matts

I’m behind Matt and Stu on the Hold Steady. I got into Boy and Girls in America last year after hearing Chips Ahoy on get the fuck up radio and it ended up being the soundtrack to many drunken evenings.

I also listened to it when I was sober and still enjoyed it just as much – which was a good sign.

We are the record club (and we are better than any book club)

The Rules:

1. host of the next Saturday arvo session chooses 3 records – 1 classic release, 1 new release and 1 cult release.
2. host needs to supply a copy of each record to all prior to the day and on the day must have liner notes and artwork for aesthetic and industrial purposes.
3. host to supply a carton of acceptable standards (think coopers green etc) and snacks of the simple variety
4. 6-packs of specialty brews are more than welcome and even encouraged to be brought along for tasting
5. a band T-shirt must be worn, the more obscure the better, the more faded the better and if it pops off due to a change in body size...you get the last beer in the carton.

add as you wish...
